What is a Captain’s Choice Rum?
Almost every year, Tres Hombres Rum introduces a special selection of Captain’s Choice Rums. Unlike most rums, which are diluted to around 40-45% before bottling, our Captain’s Choices are cask strength rums! This means they go straight from the barrel into the bottle, delivering even more intense and rich flavours.
We call them Captain’s Choice because the tradition began with our ship’s Captain selecting a particular barrel of rum to be exclusively bottled at cask strength. It is the best rum the Captain would choose! Each bottle is hand-signed by the captain who sailed it back to the Netherlands, making it a unique collector’s item.
These rums are limited edition, small-batch, and premium-quality. To highlight their exclusivity, we package them in distinctive bottles that set them apart from our classic Tres Hombres Rums. It is a collectible rum that no rum connoisseur wants to miss out on!
Where do our Captain’s Choice Rums come from?
Just like our classic Tres Hombres Rums, the Captain’s Choice selection mostly comes from La Palma, Martinique, Marie-Galante, Barbados or the Dominican Republic. These handcrafted rums are transferred into used barrels (wine, whisky, sherry etc.) before undergoing a second aging process aboard our engine-less sailing ship, the Tres Hombres, as they cross the ocean (for some rums twice) before reaching the Netherlands. This unique ocean-aging method enhances the flavors, making every bottle even more special and giving them a true Tres Hombres finish!
How do you drink cask strength rum?
To fully appreciate the depth and complexity of a cask strength rum, we recommend drinking it neat (without dilution or mixers). Its bold, full-bodied flavors are best enjoyed in small sips, allowing each layer of aroma to unfold on your palate. Blending it into a cocktail would mean missing out on the full and complex character of this special rum!
